13 June 2002JAKARTA - In a move that is hoped to bring consistency and clarity to the way Indonesian hotels are rated, the private sector will from next month rate the country's hotels, taking over decades-long authority from the central government.
A new decree will transfer approval for hotel classification to be issued by the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) and regional governments.
The PHRI will issue certificates which will be approved by the governor, a senior official from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture was quoted saying in the Jakarta Post.
Applauding the move, the chairman of the Jakarta International Hotels Association (JIHA) George Benny told TravelWeekly the move meant the industry would soon be effectively rating itself.
"Previously it was just government bureaucrats doing it," he said.
