In the Penn Quarter just south of Mount Vernon Square, three blocks north of the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery on the edge of Chinatown, this was the closest large hotel to the Washington Convention Center before the Marriott Marquis steamrolled its way in. Although this place, the Marriott's distinguished older sibling, still welcomes a steady stream of conventioneers, it plays second fiddle often taking its overflow.
