Description

Location and History
Leith Street, in the center of the George Town UNESCO World Heritage site, was once known as Hakka Millionaires' Row as it was the chosen location for Chinese towkays who built lavish mansions along this short street located not far from the island's grand Eastern & Oriental Hotel.
Cheong Fatt Tze (1814-1917) was the foremost among the Hakka millionaires. He moved here from China via Aceh (Indonesia) and invested in tin mining. He made his fortune, built his grand mansion (along with others in Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong and China), and then undertook philanthropic activities in what was then Malaya.
