The 24,000-square-metre outlet mall with 130 shops opened in mid-2015, and has proven to be very popular with travellers with its offerings of luxury international and local brands in accessories, fashion, jewellery, sportswear and more.
Facilities such as free shuttle bus service from the two airports to the outlet, automatic check-in system for flights, and free luggage storage service, have added to its popularity.
The expansion (now in phase two) is on a 27,500 square-metre site next to the current outlet, and will have 60 shops and 500 parking lots to complement the existing 2,100 bays.
Mitsui Fudosan managing officer, Osamu Obayashi, said the new phase would house more premium brands, as well as entertainment and amusement outlets.
MOP is a joint venture project between Mitsui Fudosan Co Ltd, a real estate and retail property developer in Japan, and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).
This is the first commercial property investment and flagship in Southeast Asia for Mitsui Fudosan, and part of the KLIA Aeropolis spearheaded by MAHB to develop KLIA as an airport city.
The current outlet is based on a ‘Paradise Village’ concept featuring a Sunshine Square, Pier Walk, Tropical Plaza and Beach Walk.
Phase 2 will have a Sky Walk with loud simulations on its ceilings, while River Walk will resemble a creek.
A third phase is planned for 2021 to bring the number of stores to 250, making it one of Southeast Asia’s largest outlet malls, and one of the largest of Mitsui Fudosan including those in Japan.
The investment for the three phases is estimated to be RM335 million (US$77 million).
