Incheon International Airport, South Korea’s largest airport, has expanded operations with the addition of a second terminal.
The Incheon International Airport Corp. (IIAC) announced plans to hold a pre-opening event on January 12 for the 384,336-sqm terminal built on Yeongjongdo Island, 60km west of Seoul, which cost 4.9 trillion won (US$4.6 billion) to build.
Operations at the new five-storey terminal will officially begin on January 18 with a Seoul-bound Korean Air flight from New York slated to touch down at 5:15 a.m. while another Korean Air flight bound for Manila on the same day will be the first plane to embark passengers from the terminal before takeoff.
Jin Air, the budget unit of Korean Air Lines, has launched a new route from Incheon to Johor Bahru. The service debuted on January 2 when a B777-200ER aircraft with 393 seats left for Johor Bahru in southern Malaysia.
The carrier will operate afternoon flights on Tuesdays and Fridays.
The new terminal’s 18-million-passenger capacity will add capacity to Incheon, which looks to welcome 72 million passengers and five million tonnes of cargo annually.
Airlines operating out of the new terminal include South Korean flag carrier Korean Air, as well as planes operated by KLM, Air France and Delta.
The terminal will also handle athletes and sports officials arriving in the country for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics that kicks off February 9.
