The US$1.5-billion airport, estimated at 2,600-hectare when built, is set to become the world’s ninth-largest in the world – just shy of the US’s Chicago O’Hare, which is 2,610 hectares.

The Cambodia government has approved plans to build a new airport in Kandal, the southern part of the capital, although key partners have yet to work out details.

The US$1.5-billion airport, estimated at 2,600-hectare when built, is set to become the world’s ninth-largest in the world – just shy of the US’s Chicago O’Hare, which is 2,610 hectares.

Cambodia Airport Investment Co Ltd, a joint venture between local conglomerate Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation (OCIC) and the Cambodian government’s State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), will be tasked to build the airport.

Last Thursday (January 11), OCIC reached a deal for the new airport with state-run China Development Bank, reported Phnom Penh Post.

OCIC will invest US$280 million, while unspecified “foreign banks” will provide US$1.1 billion in funding.

However, no detailed plan or agreement has been made at the moment, according to a spokesperson for the SSCA, and aviation authorities have not yet met with OCIC to discuss the project.

The project will need a long time [to materialise] because we need to negotiate on many criteria, on the frameworks of the agreement,” said the spokesperson for the SSCA.
