6 July 2000 After years of looking at the Philippines for a possible operation, Club Mediterannee has confirmed plans to open a resort in Palawan.
Tourism Secretary Gemma Cruz Araneta disclosed this breakthrough at the Sixth Philippine Incentive Marketing Conference held in Cebu this week.
Araneta, who had personally escorted Club Med executives to the location around Puerto Princessa, said the French resort operator has finally committed to open a US$20 million property in the area.
She said Spanish group, Sol Media, had also signed a contract for the reconstruction of the Ateneo Municipal in Intramuros and convert this into a 200-room luxury hotel.
Araneta also shared another piece of good news with the 300 delegates gathered for the annual conference: The Department of Tourism has secured additional funding of 100 million pesos from the government and would be re-launching the second phase of its "Rediscovery" tourism campaign.
She said a new thematic campaign was being developed in consultation with the private sector.
