The Thai government is ready to crack down heavily on bad behaviour during this weekend’s Songkran festival.

Police have banned parties where revellers dance in massive amounts of foam, citing several deaths and injuries by electrocution during previous Songkran festivals.

Bangkok Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy commissioner Pol Maj General Sukhun Phrommayon said that nearly 2,000 police officers and related officials would patrol 49 Songkran celebration venues across the city where 128,900 revellers were expected.

Sukhun has also urged revellers not to wear "revealing clothes" to help prevent sexual harassment.

In Phuket and elsewhere, police will set up road checkpoints targeting drivers under the influence of alcohol.
