The state government in Western Australia – often referred to as “the
hermit kingdom” by its critics in other Australian states – has
declared it is “the safest place on earth” ahead of an international
marketing campaign.
The
state has been the most rigorous all Australian states and territories
in keeping its borders closed to international and inter-state visitors,
holding the pandemic in check and allowing the local population to
enjoy near-normal, restriction-free lives.
The West Australian government is preparing to reopen to the rest of
the world in two months’ time, once Covid vaccination targets have been
reached.
An A$185 million tourism campaign will emphasise the state’s new brand statement – “safety, stability and strength”.
“If you’re a tourist, don’t you want to come to the safest
destination, with a vaccination rate over 90% and the lowest levels of
restrictions on venues and experiences?” said state premier Mark
McGowan.
Across the nation, the Australian federal government, fearful of the
spread of the Omicron variant, has deferred planned easing of border
restrictions for international students and other eligible visa holders
until December 15, although Qantas said flights to New Zealand are
scheduled to recommence from mid-December, while Virgin Australia plans
to resume flights to New Zealand from early 2022.
Air
New Zealand recently cancelled thousands of trans-Tasman flights due to
continuing border uncertainty but, the airline has continued to operate
a reduced flight schedule between Sydney and Melbourne for New
Zealanders trying to get home.
