Many countries in Southeast Asia are either easing or completely removing their travel restrictions to welcome international tourists with open arms, and travellers are enthusiastically responding to the open invitation, and increasingly looking to travel to Southeast Asian countries.

Travelport’s booking data reveals the following top 10 destinations in Southeast Asia that international travellers are indicating an interest in:

2. Singapore
3. Bangkok, Thailand
4. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
5. Jakarta, Indonesia
6. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
7. Hanoi, Vietnam
8. Phuket, Thailand
9. Bali, Indonesia
10. Angeles/Mabalacat, Philippines

International flight bookings to Southeast Asia have increased since the start of the year. Within Q1 2022, the Philippines reported garnering back 42% of its international bookings from the same quarter in 2019. Together with Thailand, the two countries account for 51% of all international flight bookings into Southeast Asia.

Philippines and Thailand were two of the earliest countries in Southeast Asia to reopen their borders. A week from 28 January after issuing the announcement that Philippines will fully reopen to vaccinated travellers starting 10 February, international flight bookings to the country skyrocketed to 114%. One month following the announcement, the country saw a 294% increase in daily flight bookings.

Meanwhile, Thailand had opened its doors to international travellers from 1 February under its Test & Go scheme which required various Covid-19 tests at different intervals of their visit. Within 24 hours of the announcement, international flight bookings rose 37%. After streamlining the Test & Go measures on 7 March, Thailand then saw a 128% growth in international flight bookings.

Travellers coming into Southeast Asia mostly hail from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Saudi Arabia and South Korea. The largest segment goes to the solo travellers who make up 44% of international flight bookings in Q1 2022. These solo travellers may comprise of returning business travellers, flexible tourists, and Southeast Asian expats eager to return home without having to serve quarantine.
