The 2017 China Outbound Tourism Travel Report released by online travel agent Ctrip alongside China Tourism Academy, a specialised institute under China National Tourism Administration, revealed that an estimated US$115.29 billion was spent during 2017, a year-on-year increase of 5%.

The top cities on Chinese travellers’ lists? Thailand and Japan, which have continued their reign of popularity as the two most popular outbound destinations.

Encouraged by more flight connections, better exchange rate and fewer visa restrictions, many emerging destinations such as Morocco, Turkey and Tunisia are seeing huge growth in visitor numbers.

In terms of travel preference, Chinese travellers are becoming increasingly focused on their well-being and the purpose for making outbound trips has changed from sightseeing and shopping to enjoying high-quality services.

Safety and assistance are also becoming bigger priorities for travellers. Last year, a total of 2191 SOS cases - of which 82% for outbound travel - were reported on Ctrip’s ‘Global SOS’ service, a 24/7 emergency responses and support service. The service was found to have a 94% success rate.

Travellers from Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou and Wenzhou topped the list for travel expenditure.

Lesser-known cities are also seeing a huge growth in outbound tourist numbers. Chengdu has overtaken Guangzhou and Shenzhen as the third largest supply of outbound tourists, while cities such as Changsha (+200%) and Xi'an (+300%) are also fast rising.
