TOKYO - As the Rugby World Cup heads towards its climax in Japan, early estimates suggest the Mastercard sponsored event will generate more than US$4 billion for the Japanese economy.

This year’s largest sporting event has attractive support from across the world, setting the stage for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Held every four years, Rugby World Cup 2019 saw the coming together of 20 nations. Key facts: 

  • More than 400,000 fans travelled to Japan from all corners of the globe. 
  • 34,000 Australian rugby fans made the pilgrimage to watch the matches live. 
  • 18,000 British fans were represented.
  • People from 170 countries, including Antarctica, purchased tickets to attend Rugby World Cup.
  • Rugby World Cup 2023 will be held in France.
