Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) and Resorts World Sentosa (RWS)
have come together to drive renewable energy under the Sustainable
Sentosa strategic roadmap with the installation of rooftop solar panels
in 18 locations across the island.
Palawan
Kiz City, Beach Station and three Sentosa Line cable car stations are
among the several sites SDC selected for the installation of solar
panels. These sites were chosen after ensuring that the island’s views
will not be obstructed for guests, and that the panels will be able to
receive sufficient sunlight.
Meanwhile, RWS will begin the installation of solar panels at 11
designated sites on its premises which include the rooftops of Universal
Studios Singapore and Hard Rock Hotel Singapore. These 11 new sites,
along with an additional site at RWS’s warehouse at Pandan Green
Gardens, will quadruple RWS’s existing solar network which is already
one of the largest solar energy systems in Singapore’s hospitality
sector.
This collective effort between SDC and RWS represents another big
step forward in transforming Sentosa into a carbon-neutral destination
by 2030.
Both
SDC’s and RWS’s solar panels at the 18 new sites will cover 2.5
hectares that can generate over 3.8 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of
clean energy annually when fully installed by 2023. This will result in
an overall reduction of 1,643 tCO2 per year which is equivalent to the
carbon generated by 60,000 hotel room nights.
SDC is also trialling other forms of renewable energy, like tidal
energy and waste-to-energy generators which will be mass deployed if
these pilots prove effective. Sentosa aims to power 10% of the island’s
electricity usage through onsite renewable energy by 2030.
