As part of a global expansion plan of 16 resorts by 2023, Club Med will be focusing on Asia Pacific (APAC) in the coming five years, and are looking for partners specifically within Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Philippines.

Demonstrating confidence in APAC, eight resorts are slated for opening in China by 2023, including Club Med Lijiang which opened this September.

Another destination on the radar is Malaysia. Club Med Borneo Kata Kinabalu resort is set to open in 2023 — the latter also marking its first large-scale sustainably built BREEAM-certified beach resort in APAC.

In collaboration with owners Golden Sands Beach Resort City Sdn Bhd (GSBRC), the 166,000sqm Club Med Borneo Kata Kinabalu resort in Sabah will be one of the brand's most upscale resorts in South East Asia, accessible within six hours from key regional markets.

"We have utmost confidence in Club Med's capabilities of creating a sense of destination at the Borneo Kata Kinabalu resort with upmarket designs that evoke emotional connections for guests with the destination, offering them the iconic Club Med experience in a site that is simply paradise," said Peter Wong, Managing Director of Golden Sands Beach Resort City.

According to Club Med, domestic travel to its resorts in China hiked more than 2.5 times in 2021, and is on track to surpass pre-pandemic demand. In Malaysia, its resorts saw an increase in business by more than 60% in the weeks following relaxed interstate restrictions before the recent Movement Control Order.

Jean-Charles Fortoul, CEO APAC Resorts, Club Med said, "With Club Med Seychelles and Club Med Lijiang as successful case studies of our recent greenfield projects around the globe, as well as the upcoming Club Med Borneo Kata Kinabalu, we have also identified Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia as markets that are well-positioned to leverage this rebound and we are on the lookout for investors and partners to tap into the potential of these destinations."

Club Med opened the Club Med La Rosiere, France in December 2020, Club Med Seychelles in March 2021, and Club Med Quebec Charlevoix soon in December 2021.
