Whether travelling for leisure or business, few accommodation types offer the flexibility and vibrancy that millennials crave for as coliving, a fast-rising fixture in most key urban cities.

Evolved from the concept of shared offices, coliving combines the dynamism of coworking spaces with the privacy of hotel accommodation and full-fledged amenities that are flexible and styled for interaction.

Among the most highly-anticipated brands to enter this burgeoning space is lyf by lodging provider The Ascott Limited, which opened its flagship coliving property lyf Funan Singapore in September.

Its entry into the coliving market is poised to meet the boom in demand for hospitality offerings that foster a spirit of community and collaboration, a trend driven by the fastest growing travel segment: millennials.

Here’s a quick guide to how the brand resonates with millennial-minded travellers:

1. The millennial DNA

Created “by millennials for millennials and the millennial-minded”, The Ascott Limited’s coliving brand lyf offers travellers more than just a snazzy stay with contemporary designs.

The brand speaks the language of millennials and shares their desire to connect with locals and like-minded people on their travels.

Its properties are run by brand ambassadors called lyf Guards, who serve as highly-adept community managers, city and food guides, bar keepers and problem solvers all rolled into one.

Travel agents are well-placed to capture this market by keeping handy key hospitality and tourism providers that enable millennial travellers to live out this social ethos.

2. Social spark

lyf properties offer the feeling of being welcomed into a thriving global community, where millennials experience the clever integration of apartment living with a central hub that houses flexible coworking spaces that double up as venues for social events, and communal facilities.

No two days will look the same at the newly-launched 121,000 sq ft lyf Funan Singapore, Southeast Asia’s largest coliving property.

Travellers have the chance to strike a new friendship over a stove at the communal kitchen or grab a beer while doing laundry at the futuristic ‘Wash and Hang’ area. Fitness buffs can enjoy fitness with an interactive twist at its open-concept ‘Burn’ gym, fitted with eye-catching pieces like a giant pink ‘hamster-wheel’ treadmill, resistance equipment and pull-up bars.

A regular roster of social activities is also a key strand of the brand’s social DNA. Each week, travellers can opt for weekly events from intimate movie screenings to parties, and exclusive hobby workshops and cooking classes as part of a tie up with local artists and brands.

Time-pressed travellers can opt for even more entertainment and leisure activities at the connecting retail mall Funan, which houses a fully unmanned futsal facility, indoor rock-climbing wall and a rooftop urban farm.

3. Freedom of flexibility

Housing 279 apartments that offer up to 412 rooms, lyf Funan Singapore caters to the different needs of millennial globetrotters who prize the option of variable length of stay and flexible accommodation layout.

Brief stays ranging from a day to several months can be arranged and the choices include five apartment types, from cosy studios to lifestyle-themed rooms and whole apartments that range from 18sqm to 105sqm.

Single travellers and couples can be booked under its studio category, One of a Kind, which offers a queen bed and its own en suite bathroom.

Group travellers can be accommodated at its largest apartment category, All Together, which is suitable for corporate teams or a group of friends ranging from four to nine travellers. Two- to six-room apartments are available, and each type includes a shared kitchen and dining-cum-workspace area with an interactive smart screen. Its other apartment type, Two of a Kind (43 sqm), features two private studios with a shared kitchenette.

Travel agents have a keen opportunity to serve this segment of savvy nomads, who are increasingly taking up the option to work remotely or go on international assignments.
