Shimao Group has announced its plans to sell Intercontinental
Shanghai Wonderland at a quoted price of RMB 2.25 billion. The luxury
hotel property is among other assets to be sold by the group.
Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland was officially opened in late
2018, and enjoyed social media status as a unique, eco-friendly hotel
constructed in an abandoned quarry within Tianma Mountain.
Located in Songshan, 35 km from the Shanghai city centre, the hotel
gained widespread recognition and became a landmark of Shanghai after
its grand opening. It was voted by Megastructures on National Geographic
as one of the top ten Architectural Wonders of the World.
The whole project occupies a total construction area of 61,087 sqm.
Its unique construction places it two floors above ground and sixteen
floors below ground, with two floors under the lake. This architectural
feat offers 336 rooms with lake views, underwater restaurants, and an
aquarium.
Also known as Shanghai Quarry Hotel because of its unusual spot, it
was originally built as part of Shimao Group's strategic move to expand
into China's culture and tourism market.
