The world’s first official theme park ride based on the Jumanji movie franchise will open on 2 April this year at Merlin’s Gardaland Resort in Italy.

The ride titled ‘Jumanji – The Adventure’ will take guests of all ages on an adventure through a jungle where they’ll encounter surprises, pitfalls and dangers.

The ride starts with visitors jumping aboard a vehicle that follows a track through a man-made jungle, taking them on a mission to find and return a sacred jewel to save the world of Jumanji. Along the way, they’ll encounter thrilling, adrenaline-pumping hazards, obstacles and special effects including a massive animatronic hippo, spiders dropping into the vehicle and a stone-giant set on ensnaring visitors in its cave.

The integrated resort in Ronchi, Italy, which the ride will be situated in, is already home to a theme park, Legoland Water Park, Sea Life Aquarium and multiple on-site hotels. One of these hotels will also see the launch of fully themed Jumanji hotel bedrooms opening in conjunction with the ride’s debut.

This announcement came after Merlin Entertainments, one of the world’s largest attractions operators, entered into an agreement with Sony Pictures Entertainment to develop and operate attractions, rides, lands, retail outlets and themed hotel rooms based on the studio’s box office hit Jumanji film franchise.

“We are excited to be taking our relationship with Sony Pictures Entertainment to the next level with this strategic partnership,” said Mark Fisher, chief development officer of Merlin entertainments. “Our Merlin team is already hard at work developing brilliant creative concepts, which will bring to life the blockbuster-famous Jumanji film across our Theme Parks and Waterparks.”

The attraction operator has also revealed a teaser about the next Jumanji-based ride, which is already in development for a different, undisclosed theme park scheduled for completion in 2023.

Merlin’s rights to develop subsequent Jumanji rides, lands and themed hotel rooms across its global network of theme parks in Europe, UK and North America adds on to its collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment, which has already seen the previous roll out of the Ghostbusters 5D ride at Heide Park in Germany and the Ghostbusters experience at Madame Tussauds New York.
