Anyone for cricket? And we’re not talking about sport

A Japanese airline has added an interesting item to its inflight menu – cricket powder.

Yes, cricket powder made from two-spotted crickets.

For those unfamiliar with these insects, they are found through much of Asia, including Korea, China, and Indochina to Borneo. They are attracted to dense vegetation where the males sing from the undersides of branches.

Those flying Japanese Airlines’ subsidiary ZipAir can pre-order a meal of chilli burger with tomatoes and cricket powder or pasta pescatore with cricket powder (both 1,500 yen, US$11).

The ingredients in both meals feature the protein-rich edible insect in powder form, gryllus bimaculatus.

ZipAir has a policy to serve meals only to those who reserve inflight meals in advance to help reduce food waste on each flight.

“By consuming an alternative source rich in protein, these actions can positively impact climate change,” ZipAir says.

ZipAir made its first commercial flight in June 2020, and runs a fleet of four Boeing 787s on routes linking Tokyo Narita with Bangkok, Seoul, Singapore, Honolulu, and Los Angeles.
