AviationThe manufacturer of China's self-developed C919 aircraft is hoping to break the monopoly that has for a long time been solely responsible for the manufacture of large jet aircraft

The document marked a full and reciprocal recognition of jet aircraft between the two countries and is particularly significant when it comes to obtaining airworthiness certification from the United States and the European Union for the C919.

In October, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China signed an agreement on the implementation procedures of the bilateral airworthiness agreement.

The document marked a full and reciprocal recognition of jet aircraft between the two countries and is particularly significant when it comes to obtaining airworthiness certification from the United States and the European Union for the C919.

The C919 may shake up the industry significantly if the manufacturer’s claim that its rate of fuel consumption is between 13% and 15% lower than the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320. It is also claimed that the aircraft has achieved a 3% reduction in wind resistance meaning it can fly fly faster with less fuel than its Boeing and Airbus counterparts and that the C919 will be within the most advanced level of 0.3 accidents per million hours.

The project to develop the C919 has been underway since 2008, a process which came to an end in May this year when the plane made its maiden flight. It’s first long-distance course-changing flight was made on November 10. The project is perfectly placed to be used as any example of how China can become a science and technology giant, a hope expressed in the recently-concluded 19th CPC National Congress which particularly stressed that the country must drive economic development with innovation, expand major scientific and technological programmes, and turn China into a manufacturer of high quality products.

Currently, the number of orders for the C919 has reached 730, which includes overseas customers.
