Flights to Paris, Istanbul, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Johannesburg, London and Zurich were delayed, although  less than 100 passengers missed their flights.

Hong Kong’s only connection between the airport and the city, the Lantau Link, was closed last Friday night following a shipping incident, throwing airport transport into two hours of chaos.

Flights to Paris, Istanbul, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Johannesburg, London and Zurich were delayed, although  less than 100 passengers missed their flights.

It is believed a barge made contact with the bridge, and an emergency sensor went off, forcing engineers to inspect the bridge’s infrastructure.

The incident highlights fears over a major aviation hub relying on a single road and rail link. The Lantau Link incorporates the Kap Shui Mun and Tsing Ma Bridges.

Alternative transport connections are being called for. Allen Ha Wing-on, chief executive of AsiaWorld-Expo, suggested a ferry route between Central ferry piers and the airport.
