Malaysia plans to upgrade the airport in Malacca to encourage direct China Southern flights to the city from Guangdong.

Malaysia’s transport minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, who is in China for a four-day visit, said, “Guangdong is highly interested in establishing ‘friendly province and state’ status with Malacca. This will certainly help in attracting more tourists from Guangdong to visit Malacca.”

Quoted by The Star, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd managing director, Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, said incentives would be offered to airlines which introduced new routes to Malacca, Langkawi and Kota Kinabalu.

“We stand ready to work with China Southern Airlines with support from the Malaysian Government,” he said.

Besides a daily Guangzhou-Penang flight, China Southern has a thrice-daily service to Kuala Lumpur from Guangzhou.

China Southern Air Holding president Si Xianmin has promised a market analysis on the Guangzhou-Malacca route while considering other destinations.
