The French territory of New Caledonia, known for its cluster of islands surrounded by the crystalline marine-rich waters of the South Pacific, is now a hop and a skip away via a direct nine-hour flight from Singapore.

Flight tickets between Singapore and New Caledonia are now being offered by Aircalin, starting from €1,032 (US$1,053). One of Aircalin’s spacious Airbus A330-900 planes has been specially dedicated to fly this route.

Flights will operate twice a week on Fridays and Sundays. Heading back to Noumea, the A330-900 turns around in two hours and leaves Singapore at 8.00pm on the same evening to fly through the night and land at 7.35am the following day.

The first flight departed Noumea's La Tontouta Airport on 1 July, landing at 6.00pm in Singapore on the same day.

Deploying one of its flagship Airbus A330-900 planes between Singapore and New Caledonia is a big move for Aircalin, whose fleet only consists of three planes — two Airbus A330-900s and an Airbus A320neo.

Previously, travellers who wish to visit New Caledonia had to transit through airports like Nadi in Fiji, Brisbane in Australia, or Auckland in New Zealand.
