SINGAPORE - Travel agents in Singapore were due to meet Monday afternoon to settle on a policy with airlines regarding cancellations by passengers following the US terrorism acts last week.

Wee Hee Ling of SA(UIC) Tours told TravelWeekly East one US airline had come close to penalising her passengers for choosing not to flying to the East Coast after the crisis.

"Luckily (the carrier) did not fly on that day. If they did, it would charge S$100 (US$57.50) cancellation fee, down from S$250.

"Our land operator is trying to get the suppliers to waive off the US$5,000 cancellation penalty," said Wee.

However, Wee said she understood the position of the airlines.

"The airlines will be charging cancellation fees accordingly or they will go into bankruptcy soon. We will pass on all the respective penalties to the customers plus our admin fee."

United Airlines has issued a statement on its cancellation policies.

Passengers rescheduled for travel within the next two weeks for any itinerary worldwide, who choose to refund their tickets, may do so, without penalty.

Passengers who are scheduled to travel through September 25 for any domestic itinerary may reschedule their travel and do so without service charge, based on booking class availability.

Passengers may either postpone their travel – subject to booking class availability – or reticket to a new itinerary. In the case of a new itinerary, if the new fare is lower, a refund will not apply.

If the new fare is higher, the customer pays the difference in the fare, but without penalty or service charges.

For international travel, United passengers may either postpone their travel – subject to booking class availability – or reticket to a new itinerary. In the case of a new itinerary, if the new fare is lower, a refund will not apply. If the new fare is higher, the customer pays the difference in the fare, but without penalty or service charges.

Singapore's NATAS were due to meet to discuss the matter at this afternoon.
