The southeast Asian country hopes to tap into the large LGBT community in Latin America -- especially Brazil, which is home to 20 million LGBT people.

Thailand is ramping up efforts in Latin America to position itself as an LGBT-friendly tourist destination.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) held its first trade event last week for 40 tourism operators from Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile and Colombia, according to the Bangkok Post.

The southeast Asian country hopes to tap into the large LGBT community in Latin America -- especially Brazil, which is home to 20 million LGBT people.

“We aim to promote Thailand as a LGBT-friendly destination and show them a safe tourism space by participating in the LGBT travel forum in Sao Paulo, Brazil this June,” said Jefferson Santos, the TAT representative to South America.

The TAT will also be hosting the LGBT+ Travel Symposium 2019 from September 5 to 6.

Last year, travellers from Latin America to Thailand numbered 202,106 and generated 15 billion baht (US$470 million), with Brazil, Argentina and Mexico the top three source markets.

This year, it’s aiming to increase visitor arrivals from the region by about 10% to 220,000.
