President Maithripala Sirisena dismissed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and his Cabinet last Friday, replacing him with strongman former leader Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Wickremesinghe says his sacking was illegal and he is still prime minister, and has the support of a majority of members of Parliament.

Hundreds of Wickremesinghe’s supporters have been gathering outside his residence, and there are growing fears that the turmoil could escalate if the power struggle continues.
