A Bali winery that sources its grapes from local farmers will soon open to the public, complementing its recently launched private group tours.

The two-hectare Sababay Winery in Gianyar is unique in that grapes used for wine production are locally grown, and a French winemaker from Bordeaux oversees the operation.

Grapes are sourced from a farming co-operative in northern Bali in fair trade deals and then matured in 41 tanks with equipment im-ported from France and Italy.

Sababay founder and president director, Mulyati Gozali, says the winery’s ambition is to be “the best professionally managed local winery, the leader in South East Asia”.

Yohan Handoyo, COO of Sababay Winery, says a strong Indone-sia economy is lifting per capita income and that has led to the growth of high quality restaurants serving international and local wines.

“Millennials especially are seeking gastronomic experiences,” said Handoyo. Restaurants are beginning to serve Indonesian food in different ways, so it’s not just rendang, satay and nasi goreng any-more.”

Sababay produces seven different wine varieties, largely distribut-ed in the local market, although some varieties are exported to Sin-gapore and Vietnam.

Several of the wines have won awards in overseas competitions, including the Decanter Asia Wine Awards.

The winery offers tours and tastings on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3–4.30pm, as well as private events in the func-tion room for a minimum of 20 guests.

Sababay Wines is the official wine partner for the Wonderful Indo-nesia marketing programme.
