Bali’s police chief enjoys huge support for his efforts to fight crime.

Police Inspector Dr. Petrus Reinhard Golose, the police commissioner, was surrounded by a pack of happy faces after finishing a security presentation during a BBTF seminar in which he affirmed, “Bali is safe”.

There cannot be many police chiefs around the world who get mobbed by grateful admirers but Bali’s top cop found himself at the centre of a selfie frenzy at Bali and Beyond Travel Fair (BBTF) on Wednesday.

Police Inspector Dr. Petrus Reinhard Golose, the police commissioner, was surrounded by a pack of happy faces after finishing a security presentation during a BBTF seminar in which he affirmed, “Bali is safe”.

By that, he went on to say, “Bali has done all it can to ensure security – more than some other destinations”, thanks to increased surveillance, information sharing with other international jurisdictions, coordinated response plans by government entities  “and the most stringent counter-terrorism laws of any country”.

The police chief outlined the history of the Bali bombings (in Kuta in 2002, when more than 200 died, 300 were wounded, 59 buildings severely damaged, 19 cars and 32 motorbikes destroyed), and again in 2005 when a suicide bomber wearing a backpack was responsible for 22 deaths on Jimbaran Beach.

“We are fighting not just terrorism but other crimes including drugs and organised crime,” the police commissioner said, citing measures to identify potential criminal activity, including the deployment of 600 CTV cameras in key areas, country terrorism workshops involving the tourism sector and grass roots surveillance from traditional village-based security forces, such as Salak and Pecalang,

“We had the IMF-World Bank here in Nusa Dua this year and there wasn’t one single security incident to trouble us,” the police commissioner said, to loud applause.
