Visitors returning to Siem Reap and Angkor Wat can expect to enjoy a
much- refreshed experience thanks to a US$150 million makeover of the
city’s roads, the addition of bike lanes along the river and upgrades to
the Angkor Wat heritage park.
Even more encouraging, thanks to a government initiative, revenue
from Angkor Wat ticket sales will be used to accelerate rural
development.
“Siem Reap’s downtown and surroundings, as well as the Angkor Wat
heritage park, now have a new face,” said Thourn Sinan, president of the
Cambodian chapter of PATA, speaking to the South China Morning Post.
“This new face is a very effective way to attract more international tourists and convince them to stay longer.”
Thourn said he was optimistic that Cambodia could become a “quality
tourism” destination in its quest to attract one million international
visitors this year and triple that number in 15 years.
