It’s official: Pop star and “American Idol” judge Katy Perry has introduced her big new baby to the world – the 294m-long Norwegian Prima.

Perry, as godmother to NCL’s newest ship, performed at the christening event live in Reykjavik on 27 August.

It was the first time the Icelandic capital city had hosted a major cruise ship christening.

Following which, Norwegian Prima set sail on her eight-day maiden voyage to Amsterdam.

The new ship has done away with the concept of a main dining room with a changing rotation of menus; instead, Hudson’s will offer a fixed menu and become what president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line, Harry Sommer called, “the largest specialty dining room at sea”.

Norwegian has a new upscale Mediterranean seafood eatery on Norwegian Prima, called Palomar, and a new, elevated “hibachi-style” restaurant called Hasuki. In addition, the ship has a new-for-the-brand sushi restaurant concept called Nama that will focus on “upscale sushi and sashimi masterpieces”.

Braydon Holland, senior director sales Asia, Norwegian Cruise Line, said, “We are thrilled that our ground-breaking new vessel, Norwegian Prima, has finally set sail and made history as the first major cruise ship to be christened in Iceland – with the help of godmother and world-renowned superstar Katy Perry.

“It’s no surprise Norwegian Prima is our most in-demand ship ever, notching up our best booking day and week in our company’s 55-year history. With her elevated style, design, service, gourmet culinary offering and sensational itineraries, she offers everything the modern Asian cruiser is seeking.

“Having personally experienced the ship first-hand together with travel partners from Asia, I can confidently say that Norwegian Prima exceeds all expectations.”

After its inaugural sailing, Norwegian Prima will sail a series of eight-day voyages from Amsterdam and Copenhagen, offering guests the opportunity to explore Northern Europe and the Norwegian Fjords.

She will then sail Bermuda from 10 October 2022; Caribbean itineraries from 15 October 2022; and Western Caribbean voyages from 11 December 2022 to 19 March 2023, before returning to Bermuda from 28 March to 7 May 2023.

She will then offer cruises to Northern Europe from 14 May through 17 September 2023.
