Carnival Corporation has joined the global fight in combating food waste with the installation of some 600 food waste biodigesters across the ships under Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn, P&O Cruises (Australia), Costa Cruises, AIDA Cruises, P&O Cruises (UK) and Cunard.

The biodigesters are able to process anything that can be consumed by a human by breaking down food waste with the use of microorganisms. The automated machines that can be operated round the clock are placed in locations where crew members can easily access to better manage food waste.

Carnival Cruise Line recently announced that these biodigesters have been installed across all its 23 ships, as the brand’s entire fleet made its full comeback on 2 May.

“The rollout of nearly 600 biodigesters represents another important milestone for our ongoing efforts to further minimise our impact on the oceans we sail and the communities we visit while supporting overall food waste management efforts and environmental compliance on board our ships,” said Bill Burke, chief maritime officer for Carnival Corporation.

In addition to Carnival Corporation’s ongoing efforts to manage food waste more efficiently and effectively, the company’s additional sustainability goals include reducing single-use plastics, enhancing its wastewater treatment system, send more waste to facilities that can convert them into energy, and building zero-emission ships.
